The manufacture of pandanus mats requires precision and patience. Pandan leaves are usually cleaned, processed and dried before weaving manually. The process produces a woven sheet with a distinctive natural character. Indonesian pandanus products have also long been known as commodities that have export potential.
In Sambeng, Lamongan, more than 2,600 artisans spread across 12 villages still maintain the tradition of making pandan mats. Weaving skills are widely passed down between generations and become an important part of the economy of the local community.
